Each year, Macomb County Department of Planning & Economic Development partners with the Macomb Intermediate School District to coordinate a county wide celebration of Manufacturing Day (MFG Day). Since 2014, more than 7,000 students have visited an area manufacturer to see the industry in action and meet people who make things. It is a fantastic opportunity for students to learn about the interesting and well-paying careers. The celebration is supported by an active planning committee comprised of area leaders from industry, education and government.

Macomb County Manufacturing Day Success Stories

Friday, October 5, 2018

Macomb County plans to celebrate MFG Day in a big way and we need your help!

Manufacturing Day ( is a national celebration of modern manufacturing and the great careers it offers.  Our goal is to help manufacturers inspire the next generation of our workforce to consider a career in this industry.  This year, our goal is to provide an opportunity for 2,500 high school students to visit area plants where they will see manufacturing in action and meet people who make things.  Will you help?

We need host sites that are willing to offer a guided tour(s) for groups of students and their teachers or guidance counselors who will chaperone them.

This is your opportunity to let the next generation of our workforce know that interesting and rewarding jobs await them.  Host sites may choose to offer a morning tour and/or a late morning tour.  A tour lasts from 90-120 minutes, depending on your ideas.  Suggested activities include:

  • Welcome/Safety Rules/Meet our Company for the entire group – this is a great time for company leaders to talk about what the company does, who they hire and what they offer for employees, especially if there are programs in place to help employees advance.

  • Develop three sub-tours that highlight different work areas and careers (including “front office” staff) so that students can rotate through each.  This allows for smaller, more manageable groups of ten.

  • Provide opportunities for students to interact with employees who are enthusiastic about their jobs as well as a chance to see “product life cycle” in action.

  • Provide opportunities for students to participate in "hands-on" activities so that they can get a feel for the machinery, tools and products that are a part of your workplace.

Are you ready to sign up?  Please complete our commitment form and someone will be in touch soon.

SAVE the DATE!  A mandatory Orientation Breakfast will be held September 20 from 7:30 - 9 a.m. at the Macomb Intermediate School District. The event will provide ideas for hosting a successful tour for companies large and small. The breakfast also provides an opportunity for host site representatives to meet in person with the school contact who will visit your plant. so that host sites can meet in person with school contacts to finalize plans for a successful tour.  Details to follow.
