Macomb County is anchored by a transportation network that possesses the vital infrastructure needed to service emerging industries and a growing population. These infrastructure assets, paired with a world-class manufacturing ecosystem have fostered a robust transportation, logistics, and warehousing sector featuring over 500 companies employing more than 8,500 workers. From just-in-time shipping from supplier to OEM or long distance hauling, Macomb County can do it all.
 

The county is a key part of an international trade corridor that has the capacity, skills and infrastructure to move products effectively and efficiently throughout the region and internationally. In 2018, the region was ranked the fifth largest export market in the United States as a result of utilizing air, rail, water and road for a total of $67.2 billion in merchandise shipments

STAFFING PATTERNS

Transportation logistics and warehousing is one of the most in-demand industries in Macomb County. Since 2010, the occupation of heavy tractor-trailer truck driver has increased by 73 percent, adding 2,691 jobs. The demand for truck drivers is compounded by the fact that it ranks sixth highest in annual job openings, with 842 in 2018. As the manufacturing sector continues to show healthy and consistent growth, there will continue to be an increased demand for the ability to handle the supply chain within the industry. One job in the Light Truck and Utility Vehicle manufacturing industry is the catalyst for 11 more throughout the local economy, including many in transportation, warehousing and logistics jobs that drive the automotive industry.

GEOGRAPHICAL ADVANTAGE

With the transportation, warehousing and logistics sector location is key and Macomb County boasts many advantages in this area. When it comes to shipments by air, the county is within 40 miles of three major airports. For rail, the county has two major trunks of Canadian National operated rail, located along the Mound/Van Dyke corridor and the Gratiot corridor. It is also within a close proximity to the Port of Detroit, which has more than $7 million in overseas and Canadian goods cross its docks by sea. And by land, it offers access to three international border crossings, a wide network of interstate and state highways, and an ever-evolving local intelligent transportation system.

 

LOCAL SUCCESS IN LOGISTICS

Amazon - Shelby Township, MI

In 2019 Amazon opened a distribution facility in Shelby Township, creating more than 1,000 transportation logistics and warehousing jobs. The location for the more than 1-million-square-foot distribution center was chosen because of economic development resources from multiple state and local agencies. Amazon was granted a local tax abatement on half of its property taxes and was given $10 million from Michigan's Brownfield Redevelopment and $500,000 from the county in roads upgrades near the site. The facility serves customers in Michigan, Ohio and Indiana.
